If you look at Cristian Faber's concepts for G2, he wanted a villain to use the Mask of Time to go back and conquer Mata Nui before the Toa arive. It connected to the old story, while still being able to reboot. Feels like one of Greg Farshtey's short stories such as Dark Mirror.

This BIONICLE concept art from the 2016 book The Art of LEGO BIONICLE released by the LEGO Group depicts the G2 Toa. This splash image is very reminiscent of similar images from the early years of G1 BIONICLE, and does a good job of piquing your interest in the idea of a BIONICLE reboot. I'm curious if the image is depicting an early version.

BIONICLE's had some pretty neat concept since its inception back in 1999 as "Bone Heads on Voodoo Island" to 2015 and 2016 where there was some really stellar concept art, if you would even want to call it that.
